Q: “Sheldon, How does your fascination with Search Engines qualify you as a Search Engine Expert?”

Because my fascination drives me to understand how search engines work. I wanted to know how to get good rankings on search engines, so I was driven to seek out the answer.

It all started when I used Google for the first time in 2000 when it looked like this (screenshot on right) Interesting that not much about the interface has changed really apart from the number of pages indexed.

And for several years I just took it for granted. I didn’t really care how it worked, I just cared that it did work – really really well.

It wasn’t until I started building websites in 2003 that I became thirsty and wondered “what does it take to get on the first page of google results?”.

So, like I said, I hunted down the answers. (In fact, that’s another reason why I’m a Googler is because Google can answer all my crazy questions eg “What is crush depth for a submarine?“, “Does it really take a chicken just 24 hours to develop an egg to lay?“, “Is it true that hair grows back thicker when its cut?“)

So over the last four years since then, I’ve pursued the answer.

This fascination has led me to be one of the best Search Engine Optimisation Experts in New Zealand.

I spend 100′s of hours researching SEO:

  • I talk to dozens of website developers and programmers
  • I read dozens of SEO books (hard copy and electronic)
  • I trawl the web for countless hours for every tidbit I
    can find
  • I subscribe to several Search Engine Marketing newsletters
    and discussion boards
  • Everything I learn I test on my own websites and on my clients.
    What works, I roll out to other websites. What doesn’t, I discard.

But, do you know what? All that doesn’t count for shit.
